THE PROJECT.
Mentored by members of the Netflix Product Design Team, I worked to increase Netflix users viewing experiences, discovering key features and experiences for users before, during, and after the discovery of their next binge-worthy favorite piece of content.
Because my group and I were given five weeks to form and propose our solutions, we centered around improving the discovery and experience of adult animation viewers, a burgeoning and underrepresented film and TV genre with a huge capacity for growth. Through empathy interviews, background research, and iterative designing combined with user feedback, we were able to prototype and test three distinct filtering designs capable of improving the user experience for adult animation discovery.
These included genre filtering, multi-select bubble tags, and a multi-select drop down filter. Although our designs were focused on improving the methods for discovery for adult animation, they were versatile in their uses, and could be applied to any genre or aspect of Netflix.
THE PROCESS.
In order to understand Netflix's current adult animation trends, I began with background research to better understand the history and general reception television viewers have with the relatively new genre. To start I took a wide view of the current shows available to Netflix users under the adult animation category. I want to state here that I will be addressing adult animation not as a genre but as a category of film, to reduce future misunderstanding.
Taking a wide glance at the category, there were a large number of shows and movies that fell under the comedy genre. However this media functions much differently than live-action comedy, leaning heavily into the absurd. This is validated in my user research as well. Historically, adult animation has a connotation of immaturity, vulgarity, and over the top fringe humor. This can be seen in many of its mainstream and most well known works (Family Guy, South Park, The Simpsons, Beavis and Butthead, etc.) The nature of the art form caters to surrealism, and the demographic these shows and sitcoms typically cater to is the adolescent American male. However there has been a growing development of other genres within the category.
I watched and researched two pieces of content, The Midnight Gospel and Love Death + Robots, recent entries into the Netflix adult animation catalog that fall outside the typical comedy placement. These two shows, along with many other burgeoning works are a fresh and imaginative development in the adult animation category. The consensus
